Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

That's right! Jordan Catalano ate my hypercolor underwear…..

Release Date: March 18th, 2014
*Includes a free original soundtrack by musician Griffin Peterson.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a passionate tale of friendship, betrayal, and romance—and the enchanting music that inspires one young woman to put her life back together.

At twenty-two years old, aspiring musician Sydney Blake has a great life: She’s in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her good friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers Hunter cheating on her with Tori—and she is left trying to decide what to do next.

Sydney becomes captivated by her mysterious neighbor, Ridge Lawson. She can’t take her eyes off him or stop listening to the daily guitar playing he does out on his balcony. She can feel the harmony and vibrations in his music. And there’s something about Sydney that Ridge can’t ignore, either: He seems to have finally found his muse. When their inevitable encounter happens, they soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one…

From the author of the New York Times bestsellers Slammed, Point of Retreat, Hopeless, This Girl, and Losing Hope, Maybe Someday is destined to become another bestseller and long-lasting fan favorite.

My Review

Slap bracelets, tampons, coke zero, and fairy porn.

Underoos, hypercolor, thin mints, and Jordan Catalano.

What do these things have in common? Absolutely nothing….or maybe they do. Maybe it's possible to have absolutely nothing but everything in common, a beautifully random conundrum. Colleen Hoover is that conundrum. Each and every one of her books possess a fresh uniqueness that drags you into the very heart of everything she writes. The Fault in Our Stars has the literal heart of Jesus. We have the literal heart of Colleen Hoover. No two books are alike, yet they are completely the same. A little bit of herself bleeds onto every single page which gives each book the exact same quality, but at the same time she manages to create an impossibly unique story with unrivaled creativity.

Colleen Hoover is sui generis.

New CoHo books tend to scare me though. No one can have that many amazing stories to tell. One of these days she's bound to drop a huge load, right? I mean….right? Probably not. She'd more likely drop a deuce in the shape of a New York Times bestseller and I, without hesitation, would stick my head in the toilet to read it!

Maybe Someday blew me away. It's a story you need to go into with very few details in order to fully enjoy the experience. In true CoHo fashion, she shocks us with a minor detail that carries a huge impact. With your mouth agape, you will press on to discover a story about two people with a slow and powerful connection.

People don’t get to choose who they fall in love with. They only get to choose who they stay in love with.

It's not all just angst and emotion, but humorously fun and addictive too.

The music lets you connect with the story in a way that creates the ultimate reading experience. There is an exclusive feature worked into the book where real, listenable songs written and recorded specifically for this book are integrated throughout the story and you are prompted to listen to them at the exact right time. Colleen Hoover is an innovator and may have just changed the way we experience books forever.

This book is what feeling sounds like!

Interview with Colleen Hoover

How long did you have this idea before it came into fruition?

I started working on it in January 2013 when I was still writing This Girl and Losing Hope. It wasn't until a few months later that I really started making progress on the book, and the book was nearly done when I started working with Griffin on the songs.

How much involvement did you have in writing the lyrics?

Not much. I wrote some of the lines for Maybe Someday, and was stoked when Griffin decided to use them!

Is this something you'd ever consider doing again?

Absolutely! We both had a great time with this project. We've talked about the possibility of doing it again, but we haven't decided yet.

What was the hardest part about this experience?

The hardest part was probably just trying to figure out how to best combine the music with the story. There are a lot of extra steps in the process of getting a manuscript ready when you have songs attached to it. Now that I've done it once, though, I'd like to think it would be much easier the second time!

Any chance we might be reading more about these characters in the future?

Again, it's possible. As of right now, I don't have any intentions of writing more about these characters, but Slammed and Hopeless were supposed to be standalones, too.

Last novel you read?

Mud Vein by Tarryn Fisher. So good.

Would you ever consider doing this process in reverse; have Griffin write you an original song and then build an entire book around it?

Interesting idea! I hadn't considered that, but it might be fun ;)

Interview with Griffin Peterson

Did you read the whole book, or did Colleen fix you up with some cliffs notes?

At first, she just sent me scenes from the book so I could build songs around them, but eventually I read the whole thing :)

Did you identify with Ridge's character at all?

Yes, definitely. Music is such a big part of both of our lives. Also, I think anyone can relate to the struggle of not being able to express your feelings. Ridge and I both use music as a way to express things that aren't always easy to say.

Are you normally a book reader? If so, what are some of your favorites?

Two of my favorite authors are C.S. Lewis and Margaret Wise Brown. (And Colleen Hoover, of course!)

I know you've been to a few book signings with Colleen, do people actually call you Holder?

Ha, no, they're pretty good about calling me Griffin!

Musical idols?

Some of my favorites are Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, One Republic, Ben Rector, and John Mayer.

So what's next? Any new projects you're currently working on?

I'm always writing and working on new songs in my spare time. I also have several events scheduled with Colleen this year, so I'm keeping busy! (Tour Schedule)

Would you ever consider doing this process in reverse? Give one of your original songs to Colleen and have her build an entire book around it?

That's such a cool idea! Hah, I'd love to try it some time!
